The Star Development: A New Chapter for Crieff

Including Scotland’s First Immersive Tartan Experience

Plans are progressing for an exciting new development in the heart of Crieff — creating a new cinema and visitor attraction for the town that brings together entertainment, culture and community in one vibrant, multi-use space.

Known as The Star Development, the project will transform part of the former Crieff Hotel site into a welcoming destination for both residents and visitors, creating a space that can be enjoyed all year round.

At the heart of the development will be a cinema and flexible event space, designed to host films, live screenings, community events, talks and private functions. This will provide a much-needed venue for the town — somewhere people can come together, connect and experience something new.

Alongside this, the development will also include a visitor experience, café-style offering and social space, creating a relaxed and inclusive environment that encourages people to stay longer and make the most of what Crieff has to offer.

A Home for Scotland’s First Immersive Tartan Experience

A key part of the wider development is Scotland’s first immersive tartan experience — a new, digitally-led attraction that will bring Scotland’s iconic story to life in a completely new way.

Using immersive storytelling, interactive elements and engaging environments, the experience will explore tartan’s origins, its global connections and its place in modern Scotland.

More broadly, this element of the project supports a wider vision to position Crieff and Strathearn as the #HomeOfTartan, connecting heritage, tourism and community.

Designed for the Community

While this visitor attraction has strong tourism potential, it has been shaped with the local community very much in mind.  Just as importantly, the cinema and event space will provide opportunities for:

  • Local film screenings and festivals
  • Community events and performances
  • School and youth engagement
  • Workshops, talks and private hire

In this way, the aim is to create a space that feels open, flexible and accessible. Somewhere that reflects the needs and ambitions of the town.

Supporting Regeneration and Growth

Beyond the immediate benefits, The Star Development forms part of a wider regeneration effort led by Creative Crieff. This helps to strengthen the town centre, support local businesses and attract more visitors to the area.

By increasing footfall and dwell time, the project will contribute to the local economy while also enhancing Crieff’s cultural offer.

What Happens Next

Looking ahead, the project continues to progress, with funding discussions and development planning underway.  As plans evolve, we are committed to keeping the community informed and involved. With further updates to be shared in the coming months.
